You are so right, we are losing our middle class all together. You’re either very rich or working poor these days! I am barely middle class here but, when I go to Peru I am considered rich and that bugs me on some levels because racism is very much alive but, not discussed openly. Peru is a land of so much but, the corruption keeps it down. I hope that God is able to turn things around and the people take their country back from the thieving politicians!

By the way, I’ve been to Lima 14 times and walked everywhere and nothing has ever happened. The Peruvians are very superstitous people but, they have big hearts and good souls too. God bless them in all ways and bring their wonderful nation to fruition!

People are almost always the same the whole world over… but regarding the ICE THING…I don’t put ice in my drinks not because of the cold issue… but because one is cheated in the amount of the drink….saw that in the USA and when I said PLEASE, NO ICE, they gave me such looks… like I was MAD!!! Then I pointed to the amount of the drink in the glass…. and said THAT was cheating… they said company rules…. ¡?¡?¡?¡?

Really liked this post. Since moving back to America from SE Asia a few years ago, my husband and I have talked about moving away from America permanently. I know this is not an uncommon idea these days for people of my generation (born in the 60’s). Our middle class here is disintegrating. No one seems to care anymore about their families let alone neighbors and community. Our media here is already highly sensored. I have no faith in my government. Self indulgence seems to be the norm. These are the things that scare me.

I think one of the greatest of fears is the belief that you will economicall lose everything and fall into the underclass (any reason will do, too much pressure on your job from people poorer than you who will do it cheaper for example) , this fear is useful for ruling elites to foster simple because when you create a fear and then tell people ‘you’ can help them over come it, then you have power. The middle classes are particularly prone to this fear simple because they are the the most economically vulnerable, the middle classes usually work for someone else or run small buisnesses. Therefore they are closer to the underclass, or at least the lower middle class are. The middle classes are of course always the ‘engins’ of revolutions. So if you want to stop the middle class for organising give them something else to worry about, almost anything else will do, inculding bats!
You can argue that even social reform and welfare are introduced as an answer to this fear that the middle classes constantly have, it is safety net so that if things do go wrong they don’t fall to far and as such have no reason to overthrow the ruling elite. The masters of this are of course the English, who have managed to avoid any unpleasantness like economic revolution through giving the middle class just enough to keep them ‘on side’.
