Earthquake: One week on

Earthquake: One week on

One week after the magnitude-8 earthquake that struck the Ica region, 25 miles off the coast of Chincha and Pisco, current reports have 513 down as killed, 1090 injured with 37,521 homes destroyed. With lots more rubble to clear and some Andean towns still to be visited, these numbers will almost certainly increase.

Patrimony destroyed by earthquake

Patrimony destroyed by earthquake

The incompetent INC, that’s Peru’s Instituto Nacional de Cultura or National Institute of Culture, has once again found itself responsible for destroying Peru’s priceless heritage.

Not content with exploiting and destroying Machu Picchu, and despite the vast revenue way into the tens of millions of US dollars they pull in, they had housed precious artefacts in cheaply constructed museums that are not earthquake proof in Ica and Paracas.

The Aftermath, Earthquake hits Peru

The Aftermath, Earthquake hits Peru

It is Thursday night, 16th of August. At this time images and interviews have finally begun to be shown direct from the areas affected. The towns of Pisco, Paracas and Chincha are devastated. The majority of buildings seem to have collapsed – somehow, miraculously, only causing 510 confirmed deaths so far.

Roads are beginning to be opened south, and people are rushing south to find out what happened to their uncontactable families. At packed bus stations, those who live in the area or have family their that they are able to contact have in the majority been given bad news. There is anger also as the cost of tickets have been raised.

As we passed through Jesus María, a district in Lima, we stumbled across the National Fair of Artesania. Here all that is traditional in Peru’s many regions was on display. From alpaca wool and chicha from the Andes, woven baskets from the northern coasts or dishes from the amazon regions, it was all there.

Hugo Chavez spreads his influence in Peru

Hugo Chavez spreads his influence in Peru

It has been more than a year since the Government of Hugo Chavez attempted to sway the Peruvian election in his favour by providing support to his candidate Ollanta Humala. At a time when foreign investment in the mining industry was and still is carrying almost 50% of the economy the idea was to kick out these investors and nationalise the industry. When Chavez resorted to insulting Humala’s opponents on his marathon TV show this led Peru to cut diplomatic ties in protest. After some months, Chavez came close to apologising when he met with President Alan Garcia and ties were restored.

Origin of Peru

Origin of Peru

The Spanish had explored Central America and were engaging in expeditions reaching out south-wards along the pacific coast. One ship sailed down past the equator where eventually it reached the mouth of a river. There, the Spaniards on the ship noticed a native man fishing on the coast. Four of the strongest fastest Spanish disembarked some way away while the ship continued and stopped directly off the coast infront of the fisherman. Never having seen anything so strange and wonderful before, the fisherman was transfixed, staring at the ship not paying attention to his surroundings.
