Dave, I didn't think this was a rant, a balanced comment on geo-politics that implied that the west in general but the US in particular has to take responsibility for the harm it inflicts by creating unfair markets under the guise of free market agreements maybe, all most people ask is that they stick to their word. As for doing some more research that would hardly help the American cause now would it, given that they are responsible or supportive of more global corruption and general malfeasance than any other nation (except maybe the British, who perfected many of the tactics the US now uses in the British Empire, but did it with a little more style and humanity). And where did i mention that US agricultural products would flood Peruvian markets? rather it is the markets elsewhere that the US closes to other nations, because of their subsidised agricultural products, something you didn't refute by the way so I can only assume your research has confirmed this, that is the issue, ones that Peruvian famers could export too. Enjoy the sports by the way. ;)

Does all English-written blogs just see the U.S. as the main villain? As far as I know, U.S. agricultural products are not cheap. The push for ethanol in the U.S. and the needs of U.S. agricultural products in China means that it is unlikely that U.S. agricultural products will flood peruvian markets. Anyone who lives in Peru already knows that cheap potatoes and corn comes from Boliva and Chile. So, get off your anti-American high horses.
The current issue has more to do with the cost of guano (manure for you guys). It has risen to more than 100 soles. That has meant that the farmers can barely keep up with the production costs of nearby countries. Do some more research before going into your anti-American rants.

Maybe if the Peruvian government understood the duplicity of the USA and dealt with that protests such as these would not occur. People see how lying, using brute force and threats gets the West in general and the USA in particular their own way, is it any wonder that they try the same tactics themselves. I agree however that harming the prospects of your own people does no good, other more effective tactics need to be developed, getting the Peruvian government to stop supporting American foreign policy might be a way but how do interest groups such as farmer get the politicians to listen? The only way seems to be by blocking transport routes and attacking important parts of the economy, just as workers do in Europe and the US when they want to make a point. It's easy to blame the farmers maybe we should be looking elsewhere for those doing the real harm the the prospects of Peru. Strikers as idiots, i doubt it, people that are worried about how they are going to feed their families, maybe, I do know that it's all in the name of keeping fat Americans happily sitting in front of their TVs watching sports (the ulitmate irony) while eating cheap subsidised food and moaning about the rest of the world hating them. What a world!

Tear up the tracks, torch the fuel trucks, and cause general mayhem & distruction to this countries tourism infrastructure. And when it is all said and done, these same retards will wonder why no body shows up to spend any money to help boost Peru's economy even more so. And then blame the government for this as well & probably go on strike again!! Idiots!

I don't think anyone can disagree with the reasons behind the strike, but violent rampages do little to help. If the protesters would act like human beings they might get the support of the general populace.
