Thanks Stuart,

I've generally just stated Piura as his birthplace in my articles so I should be safe. I presume the Casa Museo Gran Almirante Grau in the city of Piura is indeed his birthplace (bit odd if they made that up) – so presumably they do have an actual record of his birth. I'll ask next time I'm passing through Piura just to see if I can confirm things.

Thanks again for the info,

Hi Tony,

My understanding was always that he was born in Paita... which is in Piura. The capital of Piura is Piura, which used to be called San Miguel.

So Grau was born in Paita, Piura, in the department of Piura, not far from San Miguel, which was rebuilt closer to the river and given the name Piura.

I had always understood that he grew up in the port of Paita. Maybe that's where the confusion comes from, maybe he was really born in Piura city then grew up in Paita.

I guess the real problem is that if you ask any historian or check any source for information on where Grau was born they will tell you "Piura", which is true whether he was born in Paita or in Piura city.

Another problem is that a good few decades passed from the point where Grau was born into anonymity to a few years when he became famous. Unless there is a record of him specifically stating the home in which he was born I wouldn't be sure he was born in his Piura home.

If you really want to play it safe, say he was born in "Piura" but leave it vague as to whether you mean the city or the region.

Hello,

Great article, but I've got a question. I've been writing some articles about Miguel Grau and one thing continues to bother me: where was he born?

Now, Wikipedia states that he was born in Paita, while other sources state Piura (Wikipedia is not a reliable source, but is an often quoted one, sometimes leading to the spread of misinformation). The Casa Museo Gran Almirante Grau in Piura, meanwhile, is supposedly the house in which Grau was born.

Can anyone shed some light on this? As far as I'm aware, Paita and Piura never historically came under one name (they were always seperate settlements). I'm sticking with Piura as his birthplace for now, but I'd like to be 100% sure.

Thanks, Tony.
