Good info here, thanks. I just started looking for Machu Picchu info today so that we can go in December when my folks come to visit. I'm dreading it more than ever after this afternoon's web browsing! If it's so much hassle, why do so many people still go? I've seen so many other magnificent things in Peru.

Ah, well. I suppose I'll be forced to find out in December.

Yeah!! at least some competition. Peru Rail has monopolize the service for at least 10 years without improving anything besides the cosmetics of the trains. They need to urgently change the "locomotoras" which are very old and polluting.
You didn't mention the train services for the locals, Peru Rail called euphemistically called "tren social" where people of Aguas Calientes are treated as scum, sometimes having to wait in rain or sun outside the train station and being subjected to abuse treatment by the train guards, then they are surprised when the locals block their operations.

Hooray for options and competition! Hopefully entrance tickets to the sanctuary will not sky rocket. Not that I oppose paying to see Machu Picchu, but we all know that a minute percentage of those funds actually goes back to its maintenance.
