I learned about the pishtacos four years ago when I went to Qoyllur Rit&#039;i with an anthropologist from Cusco. The myth is still very current and people persist in the idea that fat-harvesting is a viable trade in Peru. There has been some intriguing anthopological work on why the myth exerts such a hold over local people&#039;s imaginations.

The anthropologist explained to me that typically the pishtaco is imagined to be a gringo. I was surprised to see in this news account that the pischtaco gang were Peruvians.]]></description>
