I was planning on taking my father to macho picho for his birthday like he always dreamed, do you think it will be open by then? We’re [edited] so would they open it for us? How many days does it take to see macho picho?? we will be there for 5 days and wondering what else there is to see? suggestions? My father has a sensitive stomach and takes medication is there [edited] available for tourists? [edited] food?? is it safe there? i’ve been to mexico one time before.

My husband didn’t visit Cuzco or Machu Picchu until he was 30…And he’s someone who’s traveled Peru his entire life; so yes there is so much more to see and enjoy in Peru other than MP. You can’t imagine how elated I was to get outside of Lima for the first time!

What I don’t understand is how Peru is going to rebuild the tracks to MP by this February? The last post with pictures of the washed out tracks makes this idea seem like an ayahuasca dream.

If you really want to try something else in Peru, literary “out of this world”, try the rock formations at Marka Wasi (o Marca Huasi). Rocks shaped like animals and people, some of them prehistoric, and only seen from certain angles. I went there about 20 yrs ago, so I know what I’m talking about. It’s only about 80km east of Lima (San Pedro de Casta). Google it up and you’ll see. At night, look up at the sky, and more often than not, you’ll get a nice fly-by by a UFO. Ask the locals, to them, it’s normal stuff.

Updating my previous comment: the rains have become more intense in the north as well and there have been some problems with landlsides causing disuptions to travel to the Chachapoyas area. If you are not on a tight schedule, Chachapoyas is still doable.

I agree: Peru is not just Machu Picchu. I’m a big fan of archaeology and during 10 months I visited almost 100 archaeological sites in Peru: ruins, caves with cave paintings, petroglyphs, geoglyphs. Machu Picchu is not number 1 in my list.

Brilliant article.

There is a lifetime of exploration to be had in Peru. Machu Picchu is fascinating, but many people miss out on equally spectacular sights (with far less tourists and far more reasonable prices) due to the irrepressible draw that MP has.

I heartily agree about the guide book’s comments about the roads. We went in October 2009 expecting a hard journey, but it was a breeze–we were told that the roads have been vastly improved in the last couple of years. My only regret about Chachapoyas is that we only spent a week in the area. (We’ll be back soon, though!)
