Hi Susan,

Breaking your leg without insurance would only set you back a few hundred dollars in treatment. $25,000 would buy you a vacation of a few months in the hospital after the fall! The only thing you really need to worry about is air evacuation to the US in case of a major catastrophe, which is what those high figures really exist for.

Hi,

I'm from the U.S. and am visiting Peru in a couple weeks. I do not currently have any healthcare so I'll definitely be purchasing some travel insurance with medical coverage.

I can't decide if it's worth upgrading to the $50,000 or $100,000 coverage or if $25,000 is enough.

I certainly don't expect a catastrophe, but how much do ordinary injury treatments cost? If I break my arm or leg, will that cost a fortune in Peru or should I be all set with $25,000?

If anyone has any insight, thanks so much!

Americans don't believe it until they see it. Peru is such a wonderland that when you describe it, nobody takes you literally, though they should.

I've had somebody, who by their own confession had never traveled outside of the U.S., yet they argued with my assertion that Peru has cheaper AND better medical care than the United States.

My attitude: Fine, if you like to pay $1200-$3000 USD for subhuman services, you can keep your American healthcare. I'll hop on the next flight to Peru and pay the S/.6 ($2 USD) at the corner emergency clinic and still have change left over...And I've never paid more than $20 USD for a RX in Peru.

ADHD medication for my daughter in the U.S.? $180 bucks a month!
