Nat-

What company did you fly with? I’m booking a bus from Lima to Nazca without doing a tour bus (because it’s much cheaper), so I’m wondering, can I get to Nazca and buy a plane ticket there or reserve only plane ticket without the tour beforehand?

I flew over the Nazca lines in 2008, and it was an experience I will cherish forever. Just rocked up on a bus and had the flight organised by my Taxi driver. Silly now I’ve read this article.
The really scary thing about Peru are the roads. The Pan America Highway, which follows the entire West coast of the continent, is a single lane in each direction. Although the coaches were one of the best I have ever travelled on (Cruz Del Sol) it is quite unnerving to see the risks other drivers take, particularly when overtaking. This is brought home with the multiple roadside monuments the locals put in place at the accident location, and that’s probably only a small portion of the actual toll.
Still, seeing the Nazca lines was well worth it, and Peru is a magnificent country.

6 more dead (4 British travellers, 2 Peruvian crew) in yet another plane crash on the Nazca lines a few hours ago. 2 October 2010.

So the answer to the question in the title, would probably be “no”.

My new husband and I took the flight over the lines last week.
An amazing experience, which we booked through a trusty Peruvian agent before we left the Uk.

The pilots were great explaining each line and carefully flying over each one twice for photo opportunites. The plane was in great nick and we both came away amazed along with the Dutch couple who shared our flight.

I would recommend the trip but after reading pervious comments, I would only do it through a reputable company.

Stupid people… never get on a plane your not comfortable with… as long as tourists are willing to pay money to fly there will be shoddy aircraft and pilots to fly them… a good tour cost good money… never go cut rate!!!! and when in doubt walk away!!! if enough people did this these people would not be in business…

I have to add some positive here… I took the Nasca overflight last October and it was one of my best airplane experiences. Great pilot, the plane seemed in good shape, all were quite professional. Perutravel adventures organized that trip for me (they were also very professional) and all was under control. And, I don’t like flying, I just tolerate it as a necessity to go where I need to go.

This is so terrible… 3 of the people that died in this plane crash were friends of my best friend in Peru. Very very sad.

“This same outfit killed my brother and two of his friends (along with the pilot) in April 1980. The official accident report, which was prepared before Peru adopted ICAO investigation standards, parroted the owner’s theory that a panicked passenger had seized control of the aircraft and caused the crash. Sound familiar? Just like the 2008 crash in which the same ridiculous story was offered as an excuse to exonerate the company’s negligence, the physical evidence showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that the engine had quit prior to impact. The authorities in Lima assured me after the 2008 crash that they were finally going to pull the company’s Air Operator Certificate, but apparently all they did was allow it to change its name and keep going. And now 7 more people, including a child, are dead. What a shame. It appears that this company considers 16 deaths just a cost of doing business.”

I flew over the Nazca lines several years ago with my family, it was an awful experience. To make a long story short the pilot was called on his day off to work and wasn’t to happy, unfortunately for us he tried to hurry the experience. It was the first time I had ever flown in a Cesna before, and thanks to him it will probably be the last!

Lets just say that he was rushing through the trip and was making some pretty sharp turns, all of which made all of us very ill. One by one we began to throw-up what initially was a wonderful breakfast. In my weakened state I recall briefly seeing my sister who was sitting co-pilot, vomit all over the cockpit windshield, it was at that exact moment that I did something I had never done before….I begged God to kill us, to end the suffering. If this all sounds a little over dramatized then should have really been there because my words don’t do it justice.

Thankfully we made it back on solid ground and the only individual of the flight who hadn’t thrown up was my little brother….wait….take that back, just seconds from getting off the plane the last Mendoza had succumbed to tremendous G-force ride. Worst of all none of us recall seeing any Nazca lines.

whoops, looks like I did it again, turning a simple comment into a damn story….when will I learn
