I love this idea. I must have carried 1000 plastic bags home from the San Pedro market. I used to save them, but I eventually had a bag of bags the size of a bean-bag chair. Throwing them out feels really wasteful. I would love to be able to compost them and plant vegetables. Good work Peruvian scientists! I can't wait to see biodegradable shopping bags in the market.

I'm not quite sure how new this is since in the US polymer companies have been using potato starches as a biodegradable alternative to the more commonly used petroleum based polymers. Not only is potato starch used but also corn starch is used as well but the process is not 100% organic either since it is a combination of the dried starch mixed with a polymer catalyst chemical in order to produce the biodegradable plastic.

At my university in Portland, Oregon in our cafeteria all the cutlery was made from potato starches which when I first learned about it was pretty amazed since I would have figured it was regular plastic. This was back in 2003!

Here are few links to a company in the US who has been manufacturing potato starch plastic cutlery. http://spudware.com
