Interesting these are things that the developed countries do not not that are happening in Peru. The world would be a better place if we had more people like Father McAuley.

He’s certainly walking a fine line, but I think that A.) The Peruvian government fears the violent protests of the previous year; and B.) Special interests in the Peruvian government fear not receiving their lucrative kick-backs.

If he were James Cameron, he wouldn’t be facing expulsion from Peru.

The specific charge against Fr. McAuley seems to be that he used foreign funds, channeled through an NGO, to “promote protest marches and other acts against the state”. However, Red Ambiental Loretana, McAuley’s organization is not an NGO -which here means recipient of foreign funding and support, but a local volunteer organization and is classed as a “civic association”. Never mind that the gov’t is now trying to class democratic peaceful protest as an “act against the state”!

To Father Paul McAuley:
In modern times in which British influences seem so often to be oblivious of human rights and environmental concerns, I am so gratefully impressed to see a Briton with an ethical viewpoint and courage under fire. I see this as a right opportunity to paraphrase words I once sent to Tony Blair in honor of the blokes who cleaned up Basra:
More unites our disparate peoples
than similar language and shared histories:
Common Sense;
Uncommon Valor.
In the light of the comment above re:
expatriation by the Peruano Government;
Keep a stiff upper lip, old boy!
