Hi all, I know this is an old post but I just stumbled across it and thought I would leave a comment. I am an American and met my wife (Peruvian) while living in Las Vegas, we just recently moved to the Cusco reigon and opened a bed and breakfast called GringoWasi. I can relate to a lot of these comments as my wife andI love to travel and have visited several countries in Central America, South America, the Carribieen and Europe. As I am definatly a Gringo, 6'2" and about 260 lbs. I tend to stand out and get a lot of looks, which I have gotten used to. I do love Peru and the Peruvian people though and when you get outside of the larger touristy cities, I have found the people verry friendly and courtious, they do still stare at me though.

Hi Annie, you are so lucky to be living in Peru. I would travel back there just for the amazing history of South America, the people, their way of living. I admit I was taken advantage of by an African peruvian on my last trip in 2010, it was not a good experience, but you learn from this. I met many lovely men and women there, I fell in love with the children. Yes Victor, no matter where you travel, there are many nice people among the jerks in this world.

I.m sorry if I was so tough and offensive but that stuff happened wherever and I'm sorry for the typos like asian, try accent etc. What I know is all over the world you'll find people who for some reason cheat or try to take advantage. I remember the case of Anna Nicole ( R.I.P.)when I just arrives to USA she was a waitress and she met an old rich man. They got married and everyone was talking about her as an opportunist. When I lived i Miami beach I saw a lot of times beautiful sexy young ladies walking and flirting with old guys who drove ferraris or lamborghinis. That kind of stuff will make me think that all the ladies from USA or Europe are that materialistic and oportunist but it didn't happen I met a lot of different people who really I like with them I had good conversations and a nice time.
I know there are bricheros in my country there are a lot of machism in my country I hope soon it will change but meanwhile you'll avoid them try to find the good people there are a lot of them maybe right next to you.
I hope all of you will enjoy your time as I did visiting other countries no matter if there were jerks I always found good people.
Saludos.

It;s crazy , maybe the american people or the european don't see to themselves. In most of the cities of USA you'll see the people of different races ussualy don't get along.
I don't want to be offensive but I've seen so much of the bad stuff in USA that i"m amazed how people from USA don't see that lot of the stuff they describe of our society are present in their society with a different face.
For example in Hollywood I've seen lot of times african-american guys with blonde girls. That;s good per se but lot of times those girls look like doped and sometimes the black guy is a pimp and the blonde girl a whore. Or how many times white guys trey to find asina girls who looks almost teenagers.
I've talked to guys who use to go to the bars with meth ( Ice ) they said it makes easier to pick up girls
Whne i went to a disco in Las vegas the first thing what happened to me was a young lady aproached to me dancing and she made a sexy move, after that a short blond guy aproached to me asking if i liked the girl he had a russian accet. I said yes and He replied you'll have her for 200 bucks.
And I'll keep telling more stories like this but I'll tell you stories about nice relationships I had or I've seen so be sure you'll find other kind of cheaters in your own countries maybe with other customs but their behavior hearts too.
In my country or in your country you'll find also nice people with whom you'll share good time.
cheers

Latin men are hilarious! I live in the Dominican Republic and many of the men behave the same way - the direct questions, the staring, the hissing... today at the market someone called to me "Hey Blondie!" and that is one of the nicer things they say!

Sometimes I take it as a compliment, when it is meant as such, but sometimes it is downright dirty. I also think it's funny when other white women come and think they are la creme de la creme because the men think they're hot stuff, when they're just average looking women! Reality check please.

Oh, and here I'm not sure if they have a word for guys just interested in gringas, but guys looking to get some extra financial benefits from saddling up to gringas are called sanky pankies.

I'm actually an American woman who is married to a Peruvian man. It's unfortunate that these stereotypes are held against cultures, but it can't be helped - no matter where you go. When we first met actually he thought I just wanted to sleep with a Latin man, go figure! However, we are now happily married and I'm looking forward to my first visit to Peru within the next year.

Being blonde and having blue eyes, I too noticed the many looks from the Peruvian men when in Peru. Many times I was followed in the streets of Lima. I even met and made friends with a peruvian African man, I soon realised he was after money to support his family in Spain. There was another thing I noticed, that was the horrible looks I was getting off the peruvian women, that was scarey. But I still enjoyed my trips to Peru, have been there 3 times now and plan to go back again.

Great entry! I didn't get any looks when I was in London except for when it was winter and I would wear my AUTHENTIC alpaca-wool Peruvian hat. Only then would I get people staring at me and asking me where I was from. It wasn't until I told them I was from Peru that they would be surprised. Whilst it is true that many Peruvians (or Latinos for that matter) are looking for a visa, a lot of us do have sincere intentions even if they're not salsa teachers =)
What's really sad is that gringos may be suspicious of everyone, including those with true intentions. Conversely, we are also suspicious of gringos just wanting to have fun.
