Catacaos

June 11th, 2007

Located south of Piura, the town of Catacaos is a significant tourist attraction. It can be reached from Piura by taking a colectivo. These can be found by walking the streets until someone shouts “Ca’acauuuus” at you. A private taxi would cost about 7-8 soles.

Catacaos is at the center of an area with expertise in gold and silver metal working, but it is more famous for its woven straw hats. Most people visit for the artesania in general, with many pieces and designs unique to this region.

Nearby are the ruins of Narihuala, the capital of the Tallán pre-Inca society.
