Colán
June 12, 2007
Colán is a beach town popular for its picturesque seafront lined with beach houses on stilts. It has a burning sun and refreshing waters year round and is said to have the best sunsets on the Peruvian coast.
Colán can be reached by first taking a bus from Piura to Paita (Transportes Dora) and then by colectivo from the corner of the block where the majority of bus stations are. (Down the road to the right if you take Dora). There’s not much to see in Paita – it is dirty and industrial. 15 minutes away on the beach of Colán, it’s a different story.
As well as a large beach, there is a lot of small scale fishing activity. Fishermen are taking their boats in and out of the sea all day. There’s also a church in the old town which dates back to some time in the 1500′s. Some say it is the oldest and first in South America.
