Pampa de Quinua, Ayacucho

April 4th, 2007

A journey of just over 1 hour took us from the city to the site of the Battle of Ayacucho. As mentioned in the previous blog on the history of Ayacucho, this is where South American and Peruvian independence from Spain was won.

Led by Antonio José de Sucre, Simón Bolívar’s lieutenant, the nationalists defeated the Spanish and captured the Viceroy José de la Serna, who signed the final capitulation whereby the Spaniards agreed to leave Peru.

Where the battle took place now stands a 44m high obelisk in commemoration of the dead.
